Early Life and Career
Lothar Herbert Matthäus was born on March 21, 1961, in Erlangen, Germany. He began his football career at the age of 18, joining Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Success with Bayern Munich
In 1984, Matthäus joined Bayern Munich, where he became one of the most successful footballers in history. He helped Bayern win seven Bundesliga championships and three German Cups.
International Career
Matthäus was a key member of the German national team, making his debut in 1980. He played in five World Cups, winning the tournament in 1990 and finishing runner-up in 1986 and 1994. With 150 caps, he holds the record for the most appearances for Germany.
Matthäus was also named FIFA World Player of the Year in 1991 and European Footballer of the Year in 1990.
Later Career and Retirement
After leaving Bayern Munich, Matthäus went on to play for Inter Milan, Juventus, and New York MetroStars. He retired from playing in 2000 and became a football pundit and manager.
