Early Life and Career

Lothar Herbert Matthäus was born on March 21, 1961, in Erlangen, Germany. He began his professional football career at the age of 18 with Borussia Mönchengladbach. In 1984, he joined Bayern Munich, where he became one of the most successful footballers in history.

International Career

Matthäus made his international debut for West Germany in 1980. He went on to represent his country in five World Cups, a record for an outfield player. In 1990, he captained West Germany to victory in the World Cup, and was named the FIFA World Player of the Year.

Club Career

With Bayern Munich, Matthäus won the Bundesliga seven times, the German Cup three times, and the European Cup in 1997. He also played for Inter Milan, Juventus, and the New York MetroStars.

Retirement and Legacy

Matthäus retired from playing in 2000. He is considered one of the greatest German footballers of all time. He has since worked as a television pundit and coach.
